Scuba Diving Adventure in Falmouth: Wrecks, Wildlife, and Wonder

Our recent scuba diving trip to Falmouth was nothing short of unforgettable. Blessed with mostly calm conditions—with the wind conveniently picking up only after the day’s diving—we enjoyed great visibility while exploring two wrecks and two stunning scenic dive sites, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

One of the highlights was diving the Volnay wreck—an atmospheric site steeped in history and teeming with marine life. As we descended, the wreck slowly revealed itself through the water, covered in vibrant growth. The real thrill came when we spotted not one, but three octopuses on a single dive—an incredibly rare and magical experience. Adding to the excitement was the graceful appearance of a John Dory, lurking among the shadows of the wreckage.

Between dives, we stopped at Porthkerris for a much-needed warm-up with hot chocolate, shared laughs, and breath-taking views of the Cornish coast. Spirits were high, and the sense of camaraderie made the adventure even more special, especially with a surprise visit from a pod of Risso’s dolphins.

Our scenic dives were equally fun. Kelp forests swayed in the current while shoals of fish darted past. We discovered an abundance of lobsters, scallops, and a wide range of marine life that made every moment underwater captivating. Each site offered something unique, from rocky gullies to sandy patches full of hidden surprises.

It wasn’t just about the diving. This was a real team effort—several people helmed the RIB boat throughout the trip, and everyone mucked in, supporting each other with everything from camping setups to barbecues and plenty of great food. For those who haven’t been on one of these trips, it’s worth knowing that the off-the-water moments are just as memorable. The shared responsibility and relaxed atmosphere create a true sense of community.

Exploration was at the heart of this trip—not just of the underwater world, but of our own sense of adventure. Whether uncovering wrecks steeped in maritime history or floating above vibrant reef life, we were constantly amazed by what Cornwall’s waters had to offer.

Two wrecks, two scenic dives, octopuses, lobsters, and endless fun—Falmouth delivered an adventure that left us all smiling and eager for the next dive. Huge thanks to Andy Bacon 🥓 for organising it all. 🤿
